The University Grants Commission (UGC) which is the premiere body that conducts the higher education in the country would soon introduce a new review system that would look after the accountability of the handling of grants, projects and research funds.
At the 31st Convocation address at the Bharathidasan University, the UGC Vice-Chairman H. Devaraj said that the apex body has been funding liberally to the universities across the country, which is headed by various head and includes many research projects as well. The universities that receive grants and funds are accountable for the sum that they receive. There has been a proposal from the UGC according to which there would be a new review system to verify the utility of the funds by the universities.
Devraj said that the UGC is not concerned much about the funds but is worried about not getting meaningful proposal from the researchers. There are many universities and institutes which possess adequate infrastructure and equipment to carry forward research activities. These institutes have good human resources as well, but there is a burgeoning need to fine-tune the resources available so that it could get ready for the present day requirements.
UGC would further confer Universities with Potential for Excellence (UPE) status to the universities which would transform them to world class institutes in India. During the 9th and 10th plan period, 15 universities have been accorded UPE status. In the 12th plan period the plan is to confer 10 more universities the same status.
