NIOS is popularly known as the National institute of open schooling. The institute was established by the ministry of human resource and the main objective of this was to mainly provide education to the remote areas. Every year there are approximately 1.5 million students at secondary and senior secondary levels who tend to appear for the examinations. In addition, majority of them manage to pass the same.

In the year 2012, 1 lakh 53 thousand students had appeared for 10th class examination and approximately 1 lakh 72 thousand wrote 12th class examinations. It has been inferred that there has been a progressive increase in the pass percentage of students among both boys and girls.

The examinations for the same are held twice in a year mainly in the months of April-May and October-November, as per the dates of fixed by NIOS.NIOS was established on November 1989 and there are large number of schools affiliated under this board of education.
