In a bid to benefit a number of medical and engineering aspirants, National-level engineering entrance test, Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Mains and medical test, National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) are likely to be held twice every year by the upcoming National Testing Agency (NTA). As per the reports, NTA is expected to conduct the first phase for both the examinations in the month of December 2018.

How NTA came into action?

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has been constituted as an autonomous and self-sustained, premier testing organization to conduct entrance examinations for Higher Education Institutions in the country. The NTA would initially conduct those entrance examinations which are currently conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The examinations will be conducted in online mode twice a year in order to give adequate opportunity to candidates to bring out their best.

A screen shot of an official statement released by Minister of State, Dr Satya Pal Singh said the following:

When to start preparing for JEE/NEET?

How NTA would benefit students?

  • Currently, India’s two most popular entrance exams, JEE Main and NEET for admission to undergraduate programmes in engineering and medicine, are held only once a year i.e. right after the completion of the board exams. It becomes quite hectic and burdensome for students to synchronise their preparations for the two important exams, boards and entrance level test.
  • Now, when the entrance level exams both medical and engineering aspirants will be conducted twice a year, it would become easy for students to maintain the right pace between the preparations for board exams and entrance tests.
  • Most importantly, it will give them an additional opportunity for students to appear for the exams without wasting a whole year.
  • To serve the requirements for rural students, the NTA will allocate exam centres at sub-district and district level and undertake hands-on training programmes.

Will there be any change in the syllabus and exam pattern?

As of now, there’s no information regarding any change in the exam pattern and syllabus of the entrance exams to be conducted by NAT. Hence, it will remain the same for both the upcoming examinations, JEE Main and NEET.

Note: The High Level Committee has recommended to MHRD that NTA will not declare the ranking of the candidates in competitive exams. It will only declare the percentile score on the basis of which students will be able to take admissions in various colleges/institutions in all across India.

The constitution of a single agency to conduct all entrance exams, with experts on board, is expected to bring in high reliability, standardised assessing aptitude and conduct of tamper-proof exams.
