The State Government of Odisha has announced to set up an open university at Sambalpur, to pacify an ongoing agitation in the state that demanded an IIM to come up at the western Odisha. The Higher Education Minister Pradeep Panigrahi made this announcement in the Assembly. A total of Rs 35 crore has been proposed for establishment and infrastructure of the proposed Open University by the state government.
Apart from contributing to the progress of higher education in the state, the Open University would help students with distance education, continuous training and research for students and teachers in Odisha. It would also help those students who are drop-outs and are in need of quality education despite having fewer amounts of resources available to acquire the same. It would help students from the backward and tribal-dominated district of the state and help them come under the able guidance of the university to pursue their higher studies.
The people from the Western Odisha were fuming and agitating for a long time now demanding the establishment of proposed IIM for the state to come up in their region. However the state government had made its decision earlier to locate IIM in Bhubaneswar which resulted in the agitation from the people in Sambalpur.
