A two day orientation program organized by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) along with its regional services division and the staff training and research institute of its distance education was inaugurated on 3 March 2013.
The orientation program has had around 72 academic counselors from the University. On the first day of the orientation programme, four sessions were planned.
In the first session, the differences in the modes of teaching in conventional education compared to the distance education that IGNOU imparts.
It must be noted that the cost effectiveness of imparting education through distance compared to the conventional institutions were explained in great detail.
The diversity of IGNOU learners in terms of age, gender, social status and financial backwardness pose many challenges before academic counselors which need to be addressed in a practical and an efficient manner.
The regional centre which is situated at Rajghat is the biggest in terms of enrolment. In 2012, around fifty four thousand students were enrolled for its one hundred and forty programmes.
