PhD Students from DU would get 6.5 years to Complete their degree

    In order to finish their research and complete their PhD degree, students from Delhi University would now get six and a half years’ time. The earlier deadline to complete it is set to be four years and the candidates need to undergo entrance test for admission in the course as well.

    On successful completion and evaluation of their research paper and announcement of the degree, the scholars would now have to submit a soft copy of their PhD thesis to UGC within 30 days’ time. The recent changes has been made in accordance with UGC Regulation, 2009 (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of PhD degree) and UGC Regulation, 2010 (Minimum qualifications for Appointment of teachers and other academic staff in universities and colleges and measures for the maintenance of standards in Higher Education). The amendments were approved by Executive Council in a meeting held on Tuesday.

    Executive Council member Abha Deve Habib said, “The span period of submission of PhD thesis shall be five years, extendable up to a maximum of six and a half years. In exceptional cases, the span may be extended after proper justification.” Earlier the students got four years and an extension of six months to complete their thesis and research work.

    The admission process for PhD varies from department to department, but the DU officials have now decided that entrance test would be a must for any student appearing for any PhD programme. An entrance test shall be conducted for admitting students to the PhD programme. However, separate terms may be decided for students with JRF and MPhil Degrees.
