SSC conducts the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) examination every year in order to recruit candidates in various group B and group C posts in various departments of the central government.
Quantitative Aptitude or Mathematics is one of the most important sections in the SSC CGL examination because of its role as the decider in your final merit list. So, you have to get a way of master the art of solving as many questions as possible in this section in both Tier I and II in order to get your post of preference.

• Arithmetic: In case of tier I, out of 50 questions, minimum 3-5 questions are from arithmetic which consists of areas such as

The number of questions is approximately 1-2 on an average basis and the level of questions will be of elementary level only.

- Congruence and similarity of triangles,
- Circles and its chords,
- Tangents,
- Angles subtended by chords of a circle,
- Common tangents to two or more circles etc.
This section is the most important section in both tier I and II because most of the questions are based on this and though the level is not that difficult, if you are not aware of the rules, you won’t be able to solve these questions within the stipulated time period.

• Mensuration: This covers areas such as
- Triangle,
- Quadrilaterals,
- Regular polygons,
- Circle,
- Right prism,
- Right circular cone,
- Right circular cylinder,
- Sphere,
- Cylinder,
- Sphere, hemisphere, and rectangular parallelepiped,
- Regular right pyramid with triangular or square base.
There will be 3-4 questions from this area as well of elementary level.
• Trigonometry: This portion covers
- Trigonometric ratios,
- Degree and radian measures,
- Standard identities,
- Complementary angles,
- Height and Distance.
There will be around 2-3 questions from this area as well, all of elementarylevel.

• Statistics: The statistics questions basically cover areas such as
- Histogram,
- Frequency polygon,
- Bar diagram,
- Pie chart etc.
There are 2-3 questions from this area and though they are easy to solve, they are time consuming as well. So, better prepare to do mental calculation at a speed in order to be able to solve these questions within the stipulated time.
Quantitative Aptitude: The Deciding Factor
Quantitative Aptitude is one of the areas students have to face both in tier I and II and therefore, emphasis should be given on preparing the basics of the subject well. • Get the basics right: This is the first thing to be done when you are starting your preparation. Get the basics of the chapters correct and if necessary, note them down so that you can revise them at a later date. Do not try to memorize something without understanding it because mathematics is not a test of memory but application.
• Do not go for shortcuts if you are not comfy: If you are not good at remembering short cut tricks for a problem, do not get disheartened. Better prepare to do it in the simple and longer way and make that happen as fast as the shortcut.

• Revise chapter-wise: Once you finish the whole syllabus, first go for your first round of revision and it should be chapter specific. If possible and you have time, try to solve as many questions from the chapter as possible during this time. Better go for the tricky ones at this stage.
• Practice: If you are done with your revision, get your hands at as many papers as possible and practice, practice and practice. Do not ever let anything come in its way.
• Do not try anything new before the exam: Do not try to do something you have not done since you have started your preparation, before the examination. That last minute effort to master a shortcut for one question may land into bigger troubles concerning the rest of the paper.
• Mental Calculation is a must: Get the habit of calculating in your mind as much as possible. It saves a lot of your time while you have to attempt as many questions as possible within a given time. Give yourself time to develop this habit because it is all about practice.

• Speed and Accuracy both are required: This is true for any section of any competitive examination. You have to solve problems as quickly as possible but at the same time, you have to get them right as well. Negative marking eats away the chances of a number of candidates in these exams.
SSC CGL is a test of your knowledge as well as your speed. English and Quantitative Aptitude are the most important sections in the exam since both the subjects are there for both Tier I and II. Quantitative aptitude plays the game changer because in English, you know something and you answer but if you don’t know, you cannot answer whereas in Mathematics, you never know if you have got that calculation correct.
