The Karnataka state government failed to take action against the private professional colleges that have been collecting additional fee from the students who were selected for undergraduate courses after clearing the common entrance test (CET) conducted by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA).
It all started when the KEA received complaints about the colleges charging excess fees , reacting to this sorry state, a lot of students even surrendered their seats . However, post the media hype, the government warned such colleges that if they continue to disturb students, severe actions would be taken on them.
Initially, when the colleges collected excess fees in the first round, both the higher education minister and the medical education minister warned that the affiliation of these colleges would be withdrawn, but so far no action has been taken against any of these erring colleges.

At present, he Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) has been directed to take action against the faulty technical institutions and the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) has been asked to do so against the medical institutions.
Though, the VTU issued a circular to the colleges warning that their affiliation would be withdrawn if they collected excess fees, RGUHS did not issue any circular.
Apparently, out of the one ninety engineering colleges in the state, fifty percent have been violating the consensual agreement signed between state government and private professional colleges by collecting excess fee.
