The market is not sensitive to our whims and fancies. Managing to grab a dream job, tailor-made to suit your needs and temperament is a rare feat impossible to accomplish without extreme luck and hard work. So, whether to reject a job offer or not, is a crucial question tormenting most professionals today. However, most of us have to clip the wings of imagination and get practical. Unless you are one of the few lucky ones on the planet you cannot afford to reject a job offer without careful consideration. You may not find a better option and end up being more miserable without a job than you would have been if you still had it. Beggars, of course, cannot be choosers. Yet, we beggars do have a limited number of choices. If it’s not the dream job, we could try to get as close to the ideal. There are a few reasons which qualify a rejection.
- You should avoid an offer which does not include adequate benefits, vacations and salary. Carefully analyse the benefits of the job offer. Sometimes an offer does not seem very attractive but proves beneficial in the long run.
- You have another job offer to fall back on, provided that promises a better title and compensation.
- You must refuse a better job offer if that company is not stable or if you think it will be hard to work with the people in that company. In such a scenario, it is safer to stick to the old company which is offering a secure ground at least. This job might not be worth the risk.
- Reject an offer that offers a bigger title without compensation. In this case your salary remains the same but the work load multiplies. So even with a better designation you will be required to put in extra work under a low salary bracket.
- You must not accept a better offer if it involves relocation because that is going to affect your personal life. It could prove to be more stressful, cancelling out the benefits which attract you towards the offer.
- Refuse if you think you are not qualified enough to handle the job. You might get tempted to accept it because the salary is good. But if you are not performing well, chances are that you will be fired within a few months.
- Do not join if the company is offering you a different position than what you applied for and that position does not fit your career goals. Though if you think that working on this position might give you a good start to explore your potential in other fields, then go ahead with it.
- Avoid working for a job which is not good for you and your family. This could be because of a change in your personal situation once you start working.
- If you have a disagreement with the company over the job title or job responsibilities, clarify the situation and make sure you are getting what you applied for. If not, then do not take it up.
- It is not advisable to opt for the job if you realise it is not a good fit during the interview process. Maybe you find that the company’s work culture does not suit your temperament.
- Refuse a job in which you are not comfortable with your assigned supervisor. It would be difficult to work if you disagree with his/her style of working or differ with him/her on some ethical issues.
In the end, the decision rests with you. It depends on your needs and requirements. Be your own judge and the above mentioned points will help you make a wise choice. Remember, accepting another job offer could bring you one step closer to your dream job or could put you in a fix. Think about it with a clear mind over a hot cup of coffee.
