The university took decision to introduce the course during the academic council meeting which was held on Monday.
UGC has recently directed universities all across the country to introduce courses in environmental studies and make it mandatory for the undergraduate students, so that proper awareness could get spread about the nature, climate and the environment. It could develop idea that environment is important for human survival and maintaining environmental security and creating a balanced ecosystem is a must.
The Supreme Court has directed UGC way back in 1993 to formulate a compulsory course on environmental studies for undergraduate students of all the colleges. The universities had so far taken casual approach to make the course mandatory in the academic structure. Later, the Central government itself had directed in 2011 and UGC issued another directive in May 2014 regarding the same. The course can generate interest among the students about environment at local, regional as well as global levels.
