UGC raises the bar of basic fellowship amount, scholarships
University Grants Commission on Monday raised the amount of basic fellowship & scholarships in order to boost the research scholars. This decision taken by the HRD Minister Smriti Irani was put in front of Rajya Sabha on the same day.
New Delhi: In an encouraging move to boost research scholars, the University Grants Commission from Monday onwards increased the basic fellowship amount and scholarships.
The revived amount for junior research fellowship (JRF) would be Rs 25,000 per month rather than Rs 16,000 and a big chunk went to senior research fellowship (SRF), scholars as well with Rs 28,000 per month from the earlier amount of Rs 18,000.
Rajya Sabha was informed about the revision in grants by HRD minister Smriti Irani on Monday. She said the hike in JRF and SRF in basic sciences will be on par with the similar fellowship amount disbursed by department of science and technology.
The Swami Vivekananda Single Girl Child Scholarships for research in social sciences will be raised from Rs 8000 to Rs 12,400 per month in the first two years and from Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,500 per month in the third and fourth year.
The PG scholarships for graduate aptitude test in engineering (GATE) qualified students will be raised from Rs 8000 to Rs 12,400 per month.
In case of humanities and social sciences, the increase would be by about 55 per cent.
