Under the ambitious Digital India Initiative, University Grants Commission (UGC) would map the universities across the country, under which it would look into the internet connectivity options at a particular university in the nation. In a letter by UGC secretary Jaspal Sandhu, the universities are asked to submit their details regarding the matter within the middle of the month of January.
The mapping of these universities would make it easier for the authorities to locate their current status on the front of connectivity. It would check the options of optical fibre, local area network and availability of Wi-Fi facility in various universities and its possible installation capability in such places.
The information gathered would be imported under the digital India initiative and should be submitted to UGC in a prescribed format given by the body. The details in the format include the area of campus, number of buildings, students versus faculty strength, bandwidth and availability of LAN and Wi-Fi facility.
