Nitish Kumar Singh has secured 23rd rank in the Civil Services Examination 2016 in his third attempt. He is a resident of Kathitand in Ratu in Jharkhand. He is a native of Plamu district in Jharkhand but lives in Kathitand in Ranchi, Jharkhand. His father, Prayag Singh is a retired service man and his mother is a housewife. He credits his success in UPSC IAS Exam to his family.

Academically, Nitish was a good student throughout his school days. He scored 97% marks in Class 10 from DAV School in Bhawanathpur and 90% marks in Class 12 from DPS. He has done B. Tech from Indian School of Mining (ISM) Dhanbad in 2013 then he started preparing for UPSC Civil Services Exam. Initially, he joined coaching classes for IAS preparation but he emphasised more on self-study and he thinks self-study helped him a lot to get success in the IAS Exam. His optional subject was History.
