One of the most important questions that crawl through the mind of engineering aspirants is 'What is difference between BE and BTech?'. Many experts have tried to answer this question but some important points are still untouched. In India, we have two types of colleges, one, those offering degrees in many fields like arts, science, business including engineering and are generally known as Universities, and the second, which offer degrees only in engineering and are generally known as Institutes. Universities that offer other degrees along with engineering named their engineering degree as B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering) and Institutes providing professional courses like engineering named their engineering degree as B. Tech. (Bachelor of Technology).

- In India, duration of both the courses is 4 years
- Both courses follow semester pattern, with 2 semesters per year and a total of 8 semesters in 4 years
- Orientation and approach of both the courses may be different but if we closely look into the course content then they are more or less the same
- AICTE has clarified that it does not consider the two degrees as different and grants equal recognition to both
- Both the degrees have almost similar scope and future
- If there is some notification for recruitment of B.E. degree holder then B.Tech. degree holders are also eligible to apply and vice-versa

Ans: Both degrees have equal recognition with equal scope and future. More precisely, it’s your college and branch that matters.

Ans: If a student is interested in research-oriented work and wants to pursue higher studies then B.E. may be preferred over B. Tech. However, in the present situation analysis shows that course content is almost same but the approach may be different.
Q. I want to acquire VISA for another country under Skilled Occupation List (SOL). Which degree can help me, B.E. or B. Tech?
Ans: Both degrees provide equal scope and opportunities in India and other countries. However, in some countries like Australia, a person with a B. Tech. degree may not be eligible for some jobs under skilled occupation list where B.E. degree is required.
For example: A person with one of his evaluations through an immigration consultant was told that he will have to apply as an Engineering Technologist in SOL and not as an Electrical Engineer because he held a B.Tech degree and only engineers with B.E. will come under the category of electrical engineers.
Conclusion: To sum up, in the present scenario, there is no considerable difference between B.E. and B. Tech. and no degree is superior over the other. It is the college and the branch that matters. While taking admission one must select a college or university which has better infrastructure, faculty, campus placement, and the course is approved by AICTE and UGC.
