What is the validity of GATE Score?

Nov 2, 2015 17:52 IST

GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is the national level exam conducted jointly by IISc (Indian Institute of Science) and 7 IITs (Indian Institute of Technology) i.e., Roorkee, Madras, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Guwahati, Delhi and Bombay. GATE score is used as primary criteria for admission to various post-graduate engineering education programmes like M.Tech and PhD. In addition to this, several PSUs also consider GATE score to hire graduate engineers for entry level positions.

Until last year, the GATE score was valid only for two years; however with significant changes in exam pattern, the validity of GATE score was extended to three years.

Advantages of extended validity of GATE score
    • As most companies and PSUs have one year probation period, students wanting to pursue M.Tech after gaining some work experience were unable to do. Now with three year validity, students will be able to complete their probation period and gain 1 year industry exposure before pursuing their M.Tech without having to appear for GATE exam again.
    • Some PSUs hire graduate level engineers for entry level vacancies. However, such job opportunities open up only after a gap of one or two year. The extended validity of GATE score will also give candidates keen to get PSU jobs, one more year to secure a job based upon relevant vacancy.
