What it takes to tackle WAT or GD?

    Mostly IIMs have replaced group discussions with a Written Ability Test (WAT) to make their selection procedure more efficient.

    As a debate on this decision could run for a day long, it is important to understand what they look for from a candidate in these written tests so that you can figure out a few topics and practice.


    The topics for Group discussions can also remain the same as only the format you present your information differs from a written test that is verbal. As a matter of fact, GD is not being completely overhauled by all the IIMs altogether.


    • Know the world you live in: Business leaders are expected to know what happens around them and why. Updating yourself on the current issues both national and international arena would help you a lot in cracking a written test or a GD as well.
    • Weave logic: It is important to write your thoughts based on a concrete logic; be rational in your thoughts. Analyzing every day business, political and social events help you to build your logical reasoning.
    • Do not beat around the bush: Make your points succinct and do not beat around the bush. Organize your essay with an introduction, body and conclusion.
    • Keep it simple:  Make your words and sentences simple by avoiding a rich vocabulary, instead make your thoughts rich.
