Engineering aspirants are occupied with exam preparations for the period from March to May every year, as this is the time when all the entrance exams like JEE Main, JEE Advanced, UPSEE, WBJEE, SRMJEEE, VITEEE are held. Moreover, it becomes hectic for students as they have to appear for their Class 12th board exams around the same time. The competition for engineering admissions is rising every year, and more than 11 lakh aspirants appear for JEE Main alone, the most sought-after national level engineering entrance exam. Therefore, students begin their exam preparations for engineering entrance exams along with board exams preparation.

As engineering is the most promising career option, therefore, the majority of students prefer making a career in this domain. Therefore, the competition becomes tough and rising every year. But despite, students working hard to achieve their goal, they are not able to fulfil their dream. The level of competition for engineering exams is higher than board exams, which makes students nervous and hence, they take exam stress which lowers their self-confidence and ultimately, they are not able to perform well in these exams.

In this article, we will guide students about how to score good marks even when they do not know answers to all the questions asked in UPSEE 2019 –

1. Skip the question you do not answer for:

It is best to leave the questions for which you do not know answers or, the questions which are complicated and taking more than the required time. For scoring maximum marks in UPSEE, students need to allocate only the required time so that they can manage their test time well. Skip the time-taking questions and move forward to solve next questions.

2. Implement a process of elimination to get correct answers:

Students can apply ‘Process of elimination’ to get the correct options from the choices available. This will help them focus only on valuable options for getting the answer. To use this method, do the following

(a) Check dimensions for Physics questions - If the question requires to find out the velocity, then to get the correct answer, they can use the dimension of velocity i.e. m /s.

(b) Use Assumptions Method - In some questions, students can use assumed values in place of the variable to get the correct option. This way they would not be required to solve it completely by following proper procedure.

(c) Delete the lowest and most outliers- Outliers refer to the options having ‘Extreme Values’. Remember, for any question the correct options would neither be Extreme Maximum Value nor be Extreme Minimum Value. This has been analysed that in 70% entrance exams like these, the correct options do not include options with the highest value or with the lowest value.

3. Choose any one of the options for remaining questions:

Even if the ‘process of elimination’ method fails, then students are advised to select any of the options that they feel would be the correct answer. This will not affect their marks in UPSEE 2019 as there is no negative marking scheme. Students are advised to attempt all questions to score maximum marks without fear of losing marks.  If even after attempting the questions, students are left with some time then they can implement the following methods to attempt the difficult and time-taking questions not attempted –

(a) Consider, if you do not know the answer of 40 questions out of 150, then you can randomly choose answers from 4 options of the questions. However, remember the random selection method does not ensure correct response and chance to get marks for such attempts is very low

(b) In second method you can fill the bubbles in OMR sheet for one option only, suppose you fill bubble for option C of the remaining 40 questions. This may improve chances of getting marks.
