Who can join the Indian Army?

    Indian Army is a very reputed organization in the governmental machinery of India. Being part of such an entity is an honour and a matter of pride for any Indian citizen. To ensure that all citizens have an opportunity to serve the country, Indian Army has setup up multiple entry schemes with different eligibility criteria. The main among them are listed below with respective eligibility guidelines:
    1. National Defence Academy
    The National Defence Academy (NDA) exam is conducted by UPSC twice a year to screen 10+2 students for recruitment to Indian Army.
    • Age Qualification: Candidate’s age must be between 16 ½  and 19 ½ years
    • Academic Qualification: Candidate should have completed 10+2 (Intermediate) exam

    2. Indian Military Academy (Non Technical)
    Candidates can also join Indian Army by appearing for CDS (Combined Defence Services) Examination, through which candidates are screened for admission to the Indian Military Academy.
    • Age Qualification: Candidate’s age must be between 19 to 24 years
    • Academic Qualification: Candidate should have a valid Bachelor’s degree from recognized university

    3. Short Service Commission (Non Technical)
    Aspiring candidates who are from non-technical background can join the Indian Army through Short Service Commission entry scheme.
    • Age Qualification: Candidate’s age must be between 19 to 24 years
    • Academic Qualification: Candidate should have a valid Bachelor’s degree from recognized university

    4. Short Service Commissions (Technical & Women)
    Indian army also invites engineering graduates in different technical domains to join Indian army under its Short Service Commission entry scheme.
    • Age Qualification: Candidate’s age must be between 19 to 24 years
    • Academic Qualification: Candidate must hold a BE/B.Tech Degree in engineering stream, B.Arch or M.Sc in Computer Science

    5. NCC Special Recruitment (Men & Women)

    Indian Army also offers a special entry scheme for NCC cadets. Under this scheme any graduate who holds a NCC Certification with A, B or C code is eligible for recruitment.
    • Age Qualification: Candidate’s age must be between 19 to 24 years
    • Academic Qualification: Graduate with aggregate 50% marks with ‘A’ or ‘B’ grade in NCC certification

    6. Technical Graduate Course (TGC)
    Technical Graduate Course is a mode of entry to Indian Army, through which engineering graduates can join the army as an officer. Every year, Indian Army invites application for TGC for courses being conducted at Indian Military Academy.
    • Age Qualification: Candidate’s age must be between 20 to 27 years
    • Academic Qualification: Candidate must hold a valid B.E/B.Tech in engineering stream

    7. University Entry Scheme (UES)
    The University Entry Scheme is one of the most popular modes of recruitment for Indian Army. Candidates in who are pursing gradation in technical and engineering schemes are from recognized university are eligible for UES.
    • Age Qualification: Candidate’s age must be between 18 to 24 years
    • Academic Qualification: Candidates pursing Pre-Final year in different Engineering streams are eligible for UES

    8. Judge Advocate General (JAG)
    The Judge Advocate General (JAG) Department is the legal wing of the Indian Army and consists of legally qualified army officers. The department offers legal aid and advice to the army in military as well as civilian aspects. The Army releases recruitment notification under SSC (Short Service Commission) to hire law graduates for JAC Department.  
    • Age Qualification: Candidate’s age must be between 21 to 27 years
    • Academic Qualification: Law graduate with minimum 50% marks from recognized university. Must be registered with Bar Council of India / State level Bar Council
