Is JEE Main 2019 going to be tough?
Is JEE Main 2019 going to be tough?

National Testing Authority (NTA) will be conducting Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for engineering admissions which was conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education till now. The NTA will be conducting JEE Main starting from next year and the test will be held twice a year i.e. in January and April. This is a great opportunity for students as they can now take the test in either month or in both the months. The students will be given admissions based on equated scores as the official press release by NTA stated, ‘This (conducting exam twice a year) will give more chances to students thereby giving adequate opportunity to bring out his/her best and reducing stress which develops due to single exam conducted on one single day in the year. However, sitting in both the tests will not be compulsory. The two tests (January and April tests) will be equated using psychometric methods, standardisation techniques and best of the equated scores will be used for the admissions’.

Moreover, the exam will be conducted in Computer-based mode only i.e. no paper-based test, therefore many students who are still not familiar with the online test are worried if NTA will make JEE tougher than the test organised by CBSE.

For this, NTA has ensured that there will be no change in the syllabus and exam pattern of JEE Main. However, NTA also stated that it will bring a qualitative difference in the examination process by focusing on research and scientific test design using services of Experts, Researchers, Statisticians, Psychometricians, Test Item Writers and Education Specialists. The item writers would be trained to ensure that the quality of questions is as per the test design. The experts, statisticians and item writers/subject matter experts are already identified for being inducted into NTA.

The difficulty level of JEE Main question paper can be expected to be same as the previous years as, ‘Before developing the question papers, the item writers for the exams will be given feedback on the functioning of the previous years’ items so that they are able to make test items which are more valid and reliable’.

Moreover, to make sure that students do not have to face difficulty in the computer-based test mode, the NTA will set up 3000 computer (online mode) practising test centres, which will be free of cost.

Conclusion: So, students who will be appearing in upcoming JEE Main examination can expect difficulty level of the exam to be same as before. However, there will be quality upgrades in the conduct of examination for standardisation as per the NTA.
