Corridors Dedicated to Helicopters

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) decided in March 2010 to introduce dedicated corridors at the IGI airport, Delhi and Chattrapati Shivaji International Airport Mumbai and Juhu Airfield airports to ensure safe and efficient operations of helicopters. The helicopter industry had earlier complained of the delay in operations due to air traffic congestion at these airports.

Naval Aircraft Crashed in Hyderabad

Naval aircraft crashed in Hyderabad on 3 March 2010 marking the fourth fatal incident involving aerial display teams in the last four years. The incident involving SPAT killed two pilots and injured seven others.

Committee Report on BARC Fire Submitted

Investigation Committee set up by BARC to study the cause of the fire broke out on 29 Dec 2009 in a chemistry lab at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in Mumbai, told the Lok Sabha on 3 March 2010 that the fire was caused by a low intensity explosive energy being released from accidental mixing of small quantities of reactive chemicals stored in the Chemical laboratory. The report submitted by the Committee includes several recommendations to prevent recurrence of similar incidents.

A landslide in eastern Uganda that engulfed a village in the eastern Bududa district on the foothills of Mt Elgon occurred on 1 March 2010. The landslide was preceded by after a seven-hour downpour killed at least 45 people.

The Board of Approval of the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) met on 13 July 2010 to consider proposals for setting up of Special Economic Zones and also to approve other miscellaneous requests pertaining to SEZs. The Chairman of the Board of Approval informed the members that 575 formal approvals have been granted for setting up of SEZs out of which 358 were notified.

Sunita Williams to Travel to Space

Sentence Changed for Khairlanji killings Convicts

The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court converted the death sentence of six accused to life imprisonment in the Khairlanji killings case of 2006 to life imprisonment. The court retained the life imprisonment sentence given by the Bhandara Sessions Court in September 2009 to the remaining two accused persons.

Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle Launched

The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle -PSLV-C15 was launched from the spaceport at Sriharikota scheduled on 12 July 2010. The PSLV will place the 694-kg Cartosat 2B and four other satellites in a 630-km Polar Sun Synchronous Orbit.

NCPCR Sent Notice to NVS for Violating RTE

The National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) in early July sent a notice to the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), a Central government body that runs a chain of schools to given quality education to talented children in rural or remote areas. NVS violated the Right to Education Act which mandates that for admission to schools no screening or entrance exam would be conducted.

IPCC Chose Indian Scientists for the Assessment Report

Thirty-two scientists from India were recently selected by the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to contribute to the fifth edition of its assessment report slated to come out in 2013-14. The report is known to be the most exhaustive analysis of existing knowledge in climate science.
