27 October: Infantry Day
68th Infantry Day was observed across India on 27 October 2014 to pay homage to war heroes.
The day was observed by performing the wreath-laying ceremony at the Parachute Regiment Training Centre War Memorial, JC Nagar in Bangalore, Karnataka.
Indian Army’s first Infantry contingent including troops of the 1 Sikh Infantry Battalion on 27 October 1947 landed at Srinagar Airfield and fought a courageous battle to liberate the Kashmir valley from the intruders. Till then, the princely State of Jammu and Kashmir was under attack by the tribal raiders supported by the troops of the newly formed Pakistani Army.
To commemorate this gallant action by the Infantry, 27 October is celebrated as the Infantry Day.
