It is a crucial step for Digital India mission: Piyush Goyal
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said that "it is a crucial step for Digital India mission and will go a long way in connecting the unconnected." The Minister continued by saying “Wi-Fi plays a significant role in connecting the people, and is bridging the digital divide between rural and urban India at a rapid pace."
The former Railways' minister stated that the Indian Railways, in association with its RailTel Corporation of India Ltd, is playing a significant role in bringing high-speed Wi-Fi to every corner of the country.
With this move, all the stations of Kashmir Valley now have public Wi-Fi, which is a crucial step for the Digital India mission and will go a long way in connecting the unconnected. This will serve as an added amenity for the people of the region and the country.
Any user with a smartphone with a working mobile connection for KYC considerations will be able to access the public Wi-Fi network. The move will also open up a world of opportunity for innovation and growth in the region.
The Ministry of Railways had given the responsibility to RailTel Corporation of India Ltd to provide public Wi-Fi at all Railway stations to bridge the stark digital divide between urban and rural India.
The main vision is to convert the Railway platforms to platforms for digital inclusion in line with the central government's digital India mission.
The RailWire public Wi-Fi network is today spread across over 6000 Railway stations across the country. This is one of the largest integrated wi-fi networks in the world.
It is helping connect the unconnected as over 5000 stations integrated with this public Wi-Fi network are located in rural India with poor connectivity.
