Government of India issued an order that all Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) personnel will now retire at a uniform age of 60 years. As per the order issued by Union Home Ministry, all personnel of the forces, the Border Security Force, Sashastra Seema Bal, Central Reserve Police Force and Indo-Tibetan Border Police will retire at the age of 60, instead of 57 years.

The latest move of government pertains to an order of the Delhi High Court where it had called the current policy of different age of superannuation in these four forces as “discriminatory and unconstitutional” and said it created two classes in the uniformed forces.

Existing Policy

As per the existing policy, only two armed forces personnel retires at the age of 60. All personnel in the Assam Rifles and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) retire at the age of sixty. But, in ITBP, CRPF, SSB and BSF the personnel from the ranks of constable to commandant retire at the age of 57 while those above them superannuate at the age of 60.

About Central Armed Police Forces

The Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) are deployed across the country to render a variety of internal security duties like anti-Naxal operations, border-guarding, counter-terrorism and maintenance of law and order. Seven Security forces - Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Assam Rifles (AR) and National Security Guard (NSG) are working under CAPF tag.

About CISF

The CISF was formed in 1969 with an aim to provide integrated security cover to the Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). Initially, it had only three battalions. Now, CISF is no longer a PSU-centric organization, it has become a premier multi-skilled security agency of the country. At present, CISF is providing security cover to space establishments, nuclear installations, power plants, airports, sensitive Government buildings and archaeological monuments.
