Anil Chopra took over as Commander-in-Chief of Western Naval Command

Vice Admiral Anil Chopra on 6 June 2014 took charge of the Western Naval Command (WNC) as Commander-in-Chief.

Vice Admiral Anil Chopra took over the charge of Western Naval Command (WNC) as Commander-in-Chief on 6 June 2014. He was appointed two months after Vice Admiral Shekar Sinha took voluntary retirement.

Anil Chopra a graduate from National Defence Academy, Pune is second senior-most officer of the Indian Navy and only second officer to head both the operational commands – Eastern and Western Naval Command.

About Vice Admiral Anil Chopra

• Before taking over the charge of Western Naval Command, he was the Commander-In-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command and was at the post since October 2011
• Before being Command-In-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command, he was the Director General of Indian Coast Guard after the 26/11 Mumbai attacks in 2008
• He has been the Fleet Commander of the Navy’s Sword Arm – the Western Fleet
• He has commanded
a) The Missile Corvette INS Kuthar
b) The Destroyer INS Rajput
c) The Aircraft Carrier, INS Viraat
• As Commander-in-Chief of Eastern Naval Command, he oversaw the induction of major combat platforms that included
a) Three Shivalik Class Stealth frigates
b) Nuclear submarine INS Chakra
c) P-81 Long Range Reconnaissance Aircraft
d) Hawk Advanced Jet Trainer aircraft
• He has been a Principal Director Naval Plans at Naval Headquarters
• He has been Chief Staff Officer (Operations) at Headquarters Eastern Naval Command
• He has been Naval Assistant to the Chief of the Naval Staff
• He has been Senior Instructor (Navy) at the DSSC
• In mid-1980s for induction of combat systems for the Indian Navy’s frontline units, he was posted to Rome
• He spent a year in Washington as a senior fellow at the United States Atlantic Council
• He has studied at Defence Services Staff College, Naval War College and National Defence College
• He was commissioned into Indian Navy on 1 July 1975
