RIM to Offer Metadata

The Canadian firm Research in Motion (RIM), makers of the BlackBerry recently agreed to offer “metadata” and relevant information to Indian security agencies, which will enable them in lawful interception. This initiative was adopted by RIM to do away with the logjam regarding the use of the Blackberry services in India.

Rcom & Acer to Launch Notebook

Reliance Communications and Acer recently declared their objective to jointly launch a netbook with embedded wireless broadband connectivity. Acer and Reliance Communications together devised internet connectivity sollution for the indian market which would do away with the need for plugging any external device for Internet access.

ONGC Re-entered East Coast Block

After a gap of three years Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (ONGC) re-entered its successful East Coast Block. Previously ONGC had to put on hold its ultra-deepwater exploratory work in the Block KG-DWN-98/2, where it has struck natural gas in deep sea (UD1 well) as a result of deepwater rig shortage.

Glenmark Entered into Settlement with Sepracor Inc

Glenmark on 9 August 2010 entered into an agreement to resolve a patent-related suit with Sepracor Inc over its insomnia drug Lunesta as a part of its 4th settlement in less than two years. Glenmark had triggered a patent-infringement suit against it by Sepracor when it sought permission from the US regulatory to sell Eszopiclone tablets which are the generic version of Lunesta.

Agreement between JK Paper & HP

The largest copier paper manufacturer in the domestic market, JK Paper on date inked an agreement with HP, the international market leader in printers. The objective behind signing the agreement is to give JK Paper's copier a qualitative edge and support printer performance.

Volkswagen launched Vento

German automaker Volkswagen on 12 August 2010 launched the new Polo sedan – the Vento. There would be two petrol variants- top-end automatic and higher-end manual transmission variant.

Dr Reddy's launched Cresp

Dr Reddy's Laboratories Ltd launched Cresp, which is the first generic darbepoetin alfa drug in the world on 9 August 2010. Cresp would be used for the treatment of anaemia cuased by chronic kidney disease and anaemia caused by chemotherapy.

Brandhouse Oviesse launched OVS Industry

Brandhouse Oviesse launched the Italian brand ‘OVS Industry' in India on 9 August 2010. Brandhouse Oviesse  is the joint venture between Brandhouse Retails (the retail arm of S. Kumar's Nationwide Ltd) and Italian apparel retailer Oviesse.

RBI Sanctioned BoR & ICICI Merger

The Reserve Bank of India on 12 August 2010 sanctioned the merger of Bank of Rajasthan with ICICI Bank. Following the sanction all branches of the old generation private sector bank would come to function as branches of ICICI Bank with effect from 13 August 2010.

West Bengal defeated Punjab to win the 64th National football championship for the Santosh Trophy at the Salt Lake Stadium on 8 August 2010. Bengal defeated Punjab 2-1 and Denson Devadas scored both the goals for Bengal while Punjab's goal was scored by Balwant Singh.Santosh Trophy, organized by the Indian Football Federation is an annual Indian football tournament that started in 1941. It is contested by states and government institutions.

50th Edition of National Athletics Championships

In the 50th World shooting championship in Munich on 8 August 2010 Tejaswini Sawant recently became the first Indian woman shooter to win World Championship. She won the 50m rifle prone event with a World record 597.

BAI issued Show Cause Notice

Centre for Social Research Report

The Centre for Social Research (CSR) recently released a report- “Gender dimensions of international migration from India and Bangladesh: Impact on the families left behind” on 5 August 2010. The report was based on the study of the socio-economic impact of migration on 1000 families from migration pockets of India and Bangladesh in 2009.

Zhouqu, China

In northwest China, mudslides and flood hit Zhouqu County in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Gansu province on 8 August 2010, killing at least 127 people and leaving nearly 2000 residents missing. The Bailong River which course through the main town in Zhouqu was clogged and therefore spilled over its banks causing the slide and flood.

Vibhuti Narain Rai

The Bharatiya Jnanpith on 3 August 2010 removed the V-C of Mahatma Gandhi International Hindi University, Wardha, Vibhuti Narain Rai from the selection panel of Jnanpith awardees for making derogatory remarks against women writers. Vibhuti Narain Rai had called woman writers "chhinal".

Gordon Brown

In a recent survey of 106 UK-based academics run by Professor Kevin Theakston (University of Leeds) and Mark Gill (Woodnewton Associates), Gordon Brown was rated as one of the worst post World War II prime ministers in Britain in politics and history since 1945. A similar poll was conducted by Theakston and Gill in 2004 which had rated all 20th century prime ministers.

Women Officers in SSC to be Absorbed on Permanent Basis

The Army on 2 August 2010 decided to grant permanent commission to serving women officers in two branches, Judge Advocate General and Army Education Corps after the Supreme Court maintained “contempt proceedings” against the Army chief. Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium fought the legal battle against non-grant of permanent commission to women officers after the Air Force complied with the Delhi High Court judgment of 12 March 2010.

SAVE India Launched

The country's first comprehensive vascular screening programme (SAVE India) was launched by Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals on 7 August 2010 on the occasion of National Vascular Awareness Day. The campaign would cover stroke, aneurysm and vascular disease evaluation to prevent disability or death due to stroke, aneurysm rupture or leg ulcers or gangrene.

Petrochemical Industries Corp Ltd not Exempted from Electricity Tax

The Madras High Court on date rejected the Southern Petrochemical Industries Corpn Ltd’s request to grant it exemption from the levy of electricity tax. It said that it should be exempted from the levy of the tax as it was engaged in the manufacture of ‘chemicals' and fertilisers such as urea and di-ammonium phosphate and that it had installed captive power generator sets in the Tuticorin plant.
