ICAO recommended a Departure Levy

Air travelers might have to pay a safety fee of Rs 12 per head to fly safely outside from and to India under the watchful eye of an effective aviation regulatory agency. The agency would replace Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Free Travel for the Physically Challenged

Haryana Finance Minister Ajay Singh Yadav declared on 8 August 2010 declared that hundred per cent physically challenged persons would now be able to travel free in Haryana Roadways buses to Delhi and Chandigarh for treatment at hospitals. The attendant, who would accompany such physically challenged persons, would also be entitled to free travel in the State Roadways buses.

Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award

Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal on 30 July 2010 was selected for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award. Nehwal was awarded the Arjuna Award in 2009 and was recently chosen as one of six-brand ambassadors for the Commonwealth Games to be held from 3-14 October 2010. She won three consecutive titles in June 2010 which gave her the number 2 position in the world ranking.

MSC Chitra Spilled Oil into the Arabian Sea

MSC Chitra collided with another vessel MV Khalijia III in the Arabian sea off the coast of Mumbai and spilled oil into the sea on 7 August 2010. 400 tonnes of oil is expected to have leaked into the water and spread over a radius of 5 km. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) however sought to calm fears by claiming that the quantity of oil that had spilled was not large enough to cause major harm.

Flash floods in Leh

Cloudbursts triggering torrential rain, leading to flash floods and mud slides, struck Leh town in Ladakh on 6 August 2010. The floods that took place at a height of 11500 feet above sea level, washed away hundreds of houses and left 150 dead and 400 missing.

UTV New Media Signed Up with Globosport

UTV New Media declared on 4 August 2010 that it signed up with tennis ace Mahesh Bhupathi's celebrity management company, Globosport with an objective to develop applications and interactive services for mobile and Web platforms. Also UTV would create digital content for celebrities represented by Globosport.

Tata Capital Pte Entered into Liability Partnership with Mizuho

Rcom Entered into Agreement with Universal Music

Reliance Communications (Rcom) that had won the licence to offer Third Generation (3G) mobile telephony services in India announced recently that the 3G services on its network could be offered by the end of the 2010 or early 2011. The company also announced on 4 August 2010 that it had entered into an agreement with Universal Music to make preperation for the 3G launch. 

Qualcomm Sold Stake to Tulip and Global Holdings

On 30 July 2010 Qualcomm, US-based mobile chip maker sold 26 per cent stake in its Indian broadband unit to Tulip Telecom and Global Holdings for $57.72 million. Telecom networking firm Tulip Telecom and Global Holdings which is the owner of GTL Ltd and GTL Infra, bought 13 per cent each for a combined value of $57.72 million.

New Gas Price Allotted

The joint venture between Cairn India, ONGC, Videocon Industries and Ravva Oil would be allotted a new price of $4.2/mBtu for gas produced from its East Coast Ravva Fields as against $4.75/mBtu that the joint venture sought. Untill the notification of the new price the old one would continue to exist.

Mastek Technology Partner of Foresters

The purpose of the move is to leverage US-based MajescoMastek's insurance technology solutions in three major areas of business transformation namely- new business and underwriting, policy administration, and producer portal.

International Service Providers Can Monitor Services from Abroad

The Department of Telecom (DoT) on 5 August 2010 agreed to allow foreign international long distance service providers including AT&T, BT and Orange Business Services to monitor their services in India from locations abroad. The operators would be enabled to transfer user information of their clients to locations outside India.

Integrated Plant Inaugurated at Sreerampuram

The Rs 300 crore integrated steel plant established by Steel Exchange India Ltd at Sreerampuram village, Kerela was inaugurated on 8 August 2010 by the Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development. Steel Exchange Group had acquired GSAL, a sick unit for Rs 150 crore and then invested another Rs 150 crore to set up an integrated steel plant.

First Photovoltaic Laboratory in India
