Team Profile 2022: The Chennai Super Kings were defeated by Royal Challengers Bangalore by 13 runs in Pune on May 4, 2022. CSK Captain MS Dhoni, who was playing his 200th IPL match, had won the toss and opted to bowl first. The defending champions fell short of 13 runs while chasing 174 runs. 

The RCB scored a total of 173 runs for 8 wickets and was successful in restricting CSK to 160 runs for 8 in their stipulated 20 overs. While CSK's openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway continued their smashing form by scoring 22 runs off the first two overs, Gaikwad fell soon after hitting 28 runs that included 3 fours and 1 six. Devon Conway was the top scorer for the team but he also fell for 56 runs off 37, followed by Moeen Ali who scored 34 runs off 27 balls. The others including Robin Uthappa, Ambati Rayudu, Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni lost their wickets early. 

This match was a must-win for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, who have now entered the top four of IPL Points Table 2022 with 6 wins in 11 matches. The RCB led by Faf Du Plessis also ended their three-match losing streak. The Chennai Super Kings are still at the second last place, at the ninth position on the IPL Points Table with just 3 wins in 10 matches. CSK's next match is against Delhi Capitals on May 8th at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.

MS Dhoni has returned as the captain of the Chennai Super Kings after all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja relinquished the captaincy to focus on his game. MS Dhoni has accepted back the role. MS Dhoni had stepped down as captain of the IPL team before the 2022 seasons and handed over the responsibility to Jadeja.

Chennai Super Kings have bought back many of its original players including Ambati Rayudu, Deepak Chahar and Dwayne Bravo in the IPL 2022 Mega Auction, in an attempt to strengthen its core. The franchise had retained four other key players including Dhoni, Jadeja and Ruturaj Gaikwad.

CSK Weakness

CSK will be missing some of the last season's biggest performers including of Faf du Plessis, Shardul Thakur and Josh Hazlewood, who have been signed up by other teams. While Faf du Plessis and Josh Hazlewood are now part of RCB, Shardul Thakur is now part of Delhi Capitals.

Background

The Chennai Super Kings have been one of the most consistent sides in the IPL history, qualifying for 9 IPL finals and winning 4 titles. CSK had come back strongly after a two-year ban to take home the IPL 2018 title.
