A biomass power plant in Ferozepur in Punjab is generating electricity using paddy stubble amid increasing concerns over air pollution due to stubble burning by farmers in the state.

The union minister inaugurated 250mm Seer Water supply scheme during in Kashmir during his two-day visit. The project is expected to benefit around 10000 people and will be completed within three months under the ambit of Jal Jeevan Mission.

The President of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso on October 18, 2021, declared a state of emergency with the rising numbers of drug-related violence in the country. The President has ordered the mobilization of military and police on the streets to curb the problem.

Valmiki Jayanti 2021 is being observed today, on October 20th. The day is observed to commemorate the birth anniversary of Maharishi Valmiki, the sage who wrote the Ramayana. 

5. (a) Harvard

Gita Gopinath, the first-ever woman chief economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF)is set to leave her post in January 2022 and return to Harvard University as planned. This was announced by IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva on October 19, 2021.

Russia hosted the Moscow Format Meeting on Afghanistan with Taliban representatives on October 20, 2021. India also participated in the meeting.

World Statistics Day is observed all over the world on October 20 every five years. The day dedicated to statistics and data was created by the United Nations Statistics Commission and was marked in the year 2010.

Australian fast bowler James Pattinson has announced his retirement from international cricket, just weeks before the Ashes series. Pattinson was one of the most feared bowlers in cricket. He has played 21 Tests, 15 ODIs and 4 T20s for Australia and taken 81 wickets in Tests and 16 in ODIs.
