French Open 2017: Jelena Ostapenko beats third seeded Simona Halep

Latvian Jelena Ostapenko staged a spectacular victory by beating the match favourite, world no. 3 Simona Halep and grabbing her first ever French Open title.

Jelena Ostapenko on 10 June 2017 grabbed her first ever grand slam title by beating the match favourite, third-seeded Simona Halep in the final of French Open 2017.

Ostapenko, after losing the first set 4-6, made a stunning comeback with two straight wins 6-4 and 6-3, making way for one of the biggest Grand Slam upsets. With the win, she became the first Latvian to ever win a Grand Slam singles title.

Ostapenko rallied up to the finals beating world no. 9 Timea Bacsinszky in the semi-final, former world no. 1 Caroline Wozniacki in the quarter-final and Olympic champion Monica Puig and former finalist Sam Stosur in the qualifying rounds.

 Unseeded Latvian wins French Open Title

Key Highlights

• At 20, Ostapenko is the youngest French Open champion since Iva Majoli, who won at the age of 19 in 1997.

• She is also the first unseeded woman to triumph in the tournament since Margaret Scriven of England in 1933.

• Prior to this win, Ostapenko had not gone past the third round in her first seven Grand Slam singles tournaments.

• With this win, Ostapenko’s ranking has risen from 47 to 12.

• Born on 8 June 1997, Ostapenko was introduced to tennis at the age 5 by her mother and idolized Serena Williams while growing up.

• Her career best singles ranking in Women's Tennis Association (WTA) has been world number 33.

• On 30 January 2017, she peaked at world number 33 in the WTA doubles rankings as well.

• In addition to her singles career, she has also played as a member of Latvia's Fed Cup team.

• She has won seven singles and eight doubles titles on the ITF tour.

• She has also won the singles event at the Junior 2014 Wimbledon Championships and was ranked the number 2 junior tennis player in the world in September 2014.

• She made her WTA Tour main draw debut at the 2014 Tashkent Open

• The prize earnings of her entire career amount to about $1,288,260 while her recent victory itself was worth $2,351,097.

Further, this was the first Grand Slam tournament to feature neither Serena Williams nor Maria Sharapova since the 2002 Australian Open. It was also for the first time in French Open history that both reigning champions of the Australian Open withdrew before the tournament began.
