India’s newest airline Akasa Airline backed by India’s billionaire Rakesh Jhunjhunwala placed a huge order of 72 Boeing 737 Max planes at the ongoing Dubai Air Show. In July 2021, Jhunjhunwala had announced his plans to launch his own ultra-low-cost airline with 70 aircraft in the next 4 years. Akasa Air has received the No Objection Certificate from the Civil Aviation Ministry and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for the launch of the airline.

The Boeing Max plane is the same aircraft model that was grounded by DGCA following two fatal crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia in 2019. On August 26, 2021, the DGCA lifted its ban on Boeing 737 Max aircraft after a two-and-a-half-years regulatory grounding. The delivery of two models from the 737 Max plane fleet, the high capacity 737-8-200 and the 737-8 aircraft will begin in mid-2022, stated Boeing. |

Akasa Air is India’s newest airline which is backed by Rakesh Jhunjhunwala with 40 per cent stake in the company. The Co-founder of Akasa Air Aditya Ghosh who was the former President of Indigo will have a 10 per cent stake in the company. The CEO of Akasa Air Vinay Dube who was former CEO at Jet Airways will have a 15 per cent stake in the company. A former senior executive of Delta Air Lines Inc. will be a part of the founding team, stated media reports.
Media reports also state that other key people at Akasa Air will see former GoAir revenue management VP Anand Srinivasan as CTO, former Jet Airways senior VP Praveen Iyer as COO, former Jet flight operations VP Floyd Gracious as CTO or a similar role, and industry veteran Neelu Khatri as Head, Corporate Affairs.
Airbnb and Par Capital Management are among the investors in Akasa Air.
Operations start date and fleet
The ultra-low-cost airline Akasa Air is expected to begin its operations in Summer 2022. It aims to be India’s most affordable, dependable, and greenest airline. The airline will fly single-aisle Boeing 737 Max planes in its fleet.
