Indo-Bangladesh Joint Rafting Expedition on River Siyom, Arunachal Pradesh

Indo-Bangladesh Joint Rafting Expedition was conducted on the Siyom River in West Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh. The expedition was organised by Army Adventure Node Centre, Aalo, under the aegis of 5 Mountain Brigade of Indian Army from 1 October to 3 October 2014.

During expedition, the team covered 85 km over three days through the rapids of the Siyom River from Thumbin to Pangin in West Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh. Both team had 10 Army personnel including two officers.

The expedition was flagged off by Lt Gen Bipin Rawat, GOC Spear Corps on 1 October 2014 at Thumbin and was flagged in by the Maj Gen Sunil Srivastava, GOC 56 Infantry Division on 3 October 2014 at Pangin.

The Indian Army team was led by Maj Sachin Nikam and the Bangladeshi team was led by Maj Mohd Nazmus Sadat. The Bangladeshi team reached India on 18 September 2104 and was trained by the Indian White Water Rafting node at Aalo.

This expedition is being considered as a bid to foster ties between the Army of the two neighbouring countries.

About Siyom River

River Siyom also known as the Yomgo originates in Tibet and enters India by meandering through steep gorges on the India-China border at an elevation of about 3700 meters. After entering India it joins Siang (Brahmaputra) at Pangin, about 30 kilometers road distance from Aalo. It is the largest river of the West Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh.
