International Volunteer Day (IVD) is observed on December 5 every year across the globe. This day is celebrated to show gratitude towards all those people who are working free of charge and help other people without monetary benefits. This year United Nations Volunteers (UNV) announced its theme – “Volunteer for an inclusive future".

This day is a global celebration of respect for people's participation in making changes at all levels - local, national and international. IVD is observed to spread awareness among masses towards volunteering opportunities.

IVD 2019 Theme

This year's theme of International Volunteer Day is - “Volunteer for an inclusive future". It highlights a challenge for every citizen to implement and be part of the Sustainable Development Goals-2030 for Sustainable Development of the world. It is believed that individuals can influence the agenda of sustainable development by making communities and governments dynamic and engaged through volunteering.

 History of International Volunteer Day

The United Nations passes a resolution on 17 December 1985 (A / RES / 40/212) that 05 December will be observed as International Volunteer Day. On this occasion, conferences, seminars, exhibitions, cleanliness campaigns, morning tea, etc. are organized to create public awareness. This opportunity highlights the increasing involvement and participation of volunteers at the community level.

Significance

This day is observed to recognize efforts made by volunteers and organizations to implement Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). UN says that volunteers, work among their own communities, collective organizations, NGOs, UN agencies; government officials and the private sectors to promote SDGs, are a valuable part of UN International Volunteer Day. The day is also a unique opportunity for volunteers and organizations to celebrate and encourage their efforts.
