Justice Amitava Roy sworn in as Supreme Court judge

Amitava RoyJustice Amitava Roy was sworn in as a judge of the Supreme Court (SC) on 27 February 2015. Prior to this, he served as the Chief Justice of Odisha High Court.

With his elevation, the strength of the SC judges has gone up to 29. SC has a sectioned strength of 31 judges.

He will have tenure of three years.

Amitava Roy born in Kolkata in 195, served as a member of Assam Law Commission and became a Judge of the Gauhati High Court on 4 February 2002.

On 2 January 2013, he was appointed as Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court.

Article 124 of Constitution of India says that the judge of SC shall be appointed by the President.

Any citizen of India who has been a judge of one high court or more, for at least five years or an advocate there, for at least ten years, or a distinguished jurist, in the opinion of the president, is eligible to be appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court.
