The Lok Sabha Elections 2019 concluded successfully on May 19, 2019, sealing the fate of 8,049 candidates contesting from 542 Lok Sabha seats. Of these, around 715 are women candidates.

The Congress and the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) have fielded over 50 women candidates each in the Lok Sabha Elections 2019. Though the BJP and the Congress are fielding maximum number of women candidates, but percentage is still low in comparison to the total their nominated candidates.

Apart from these parties, only two parties undertook serious steps to give women a powerful representation. Odisha’s Biju Janata Dal reserved 33 percent for women in allotting party tickets and West Bengal’s All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) reserved 41 percent seats for women, nominating over 20 women out of 42 candidates.

Note: India stood at 149th position in a ranking of 193 countries in consideration of the representation of women in the parliament. In the present Lok Sabha, there are only 66 female members in the parliament. India trailed behind Bangladesh (97th), Pakistan (101st), and even Saudi Arabia (106th).
