Maharashtra Government Formation LIVE: Uddhav Thackeray has taken the oath as the 18th Chief  Minister of Maharashtra. He is the first member of the Thackeray family to be sworn in as Maharashtra CM. He is also the third Shiv Sena leader to occupy the top post, after Narayan Rane and Manohar Joshi and the first in 20 years.

The historic day marks many other firsts in the Indian political history, as the Shiv Sena Chief will become the first Thackeray family member to claim the position. This would also be the first instance when the Shiv Sena comes together to form the government with the Congress, its arch-rivals for 30 years.

Maharashtra government formation live update @7:29 PM: PM Narendra Modi took to twitter to congratulate Uddhav Thackeray on taking oath as the Maharashtra CM. PM Modi expressed confidence that Thackeray will work diligently for Maharashtra's bright future.

Despite reports of Shiv Sena's initial disagreements on using the term 'secular', the word appears in the very first line of the common minimum programme's preamble, which talks about the alliance partners committing to uphold secular values of the constitution.

The Congress President wrote a letter to Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray, informing him that she will not be able to attend the oath-taking ceremony today. Gandhi noted that the three parties have come together under extraordinary circumstances at a time when the country faces unprecedented threats from the BJP. She observed that the political atmosphere has become poisonous and the economy has collapsed. She, however, expressed great confidence on the common minimum program agreed to by all the three parties and stated that the Shiv Sena-NCP and Congress together will undoubtedly ensure that all the expectations of the people of Maharashtra are fulfilled. She concluded her letter by wishing the Sena Chief all the best for his new innings.

Maharashtra government formation live update @5:05 PM: Sonia Gandhi will not be present at the swearing-in ceremony. The Congress President wrote a letter to the Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray stating her inability to attend the swearing-in ceremony today.

Shiv Sena's Eknath Shinde said during a press conference of the 'Maha Vikas Aghadi' that a law will be enacted to ensure that 80 percent reservation is given to the locals in both existing and new companies. NCP's Jayant Patil stated that the first cabinet meeting of the Maharashtra government will be held later today.

1. Immediate assistance and loan waiver for farmers.

2. Revision of the crop insurance scheme to ensure immediate compensation to farmers who have lost their crops.

3. Immediate filling of all vacant posts in state government.

4. Law to be introduced to ensure 80 percent reservation in jobs for local/domicile youth. 

5. Ensuring women's safety. 

6. Free education for girls from economically weaker section. 

7. Construction of working women's hostel.

8. Increase in honorarium for Anganwadi/ Asha workers. 

9. Increase standard of education in the state. 

10. Children of farm labours to receive education loan at zero percent interest. 

11. Ensure good and affordable healthcare to all citizens. One Rupee clinic to be launched at Taluka level.

12. Concessions to be provided to new industries and investors. 

Maharashtra government formation live update @4:00 PM: Common Minimum Program of 'Maha Vikas Aghadi' has been released. The program broadly aims to address issues related to farmers, unemployment, women, education, urban development, health, industry, social justice and tourism, arts & culture.

Maharashtra government formation live update @3:30 PM: NCP's Praful Patel: Total six leaders will be sworn in today, two from each party. According to sources, Congress leaders Balasaheb Thorat and Nitin Raut will be sworn in today as Ministers. NCP's Jayant Patil  and Chhagan Bhujbal are also expected to take oath today. 

Maharashtra government formation live update @3:20 PM: Ajit Pawar not taking oath today. NCP leader Ajit Pawar revealed that he would not be taking oath today. He said that top six leaders will be taking oath from the three parties. The decision on Deputy CM is yet to be taken.

Maharashtra government formation live update @3:10 PM: While Uddhav Thackeray will be sworn in as the CM, an NCP leader is expected to be sworn in as deputy CM and Congress is expected to get the speaker’s post. Thackeray will be the 8th Maharashtra CM to be sworn while not being a member of the Maharashtra legislature. He will have to get one of his MLAs to resign and contest and win from the seat within six months of taking the oath.

The other CMs to have taken the oath previously without being members of the legislature include Congress leaders Prithviraj Chavan, Sushilkumar Shinde, Shankarrao Chavan, Shivajirao Nilangekar-Patil, Vasantdada Patil and AR Antulay and current NCP Chief Sharad Pawar.

Maharashtra government formation live update @3:00 PM: Other prominent invitees to the swearing-in ceremony include former Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, DMK chief MK Stalin and the Chief Ministers if all Congress-ruled states.

Maharashtra government formation live update @2:50 PM: Yuva Sena Chief Aaditya Thackeray had met Congress President Sonia Gandhi on November 27, 2019 to invite her for the swearing-in ceremony of his father, Uddhav Thackeray. Aditya Thackeray also called upon former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and invited him for the landmark moment. Uddhav Thackeray is also reported to have called PM Narendra Modi and invited him for the ceremony.

Maharashtra government formation live update @2:40 PM: This would be the first-ever time that the Shiv Sena is tying up with the Congress. NCP’s Sharad Pawar is said to have played a huge role in the coming together of the three ideologically opposite parties- Shiv Sena, NCP and the Congress-as the ‘Maha Vikas Aghadi’.

Maharashtra government formation live update @2:30 PM: The Shiv Sena broke its 30-year-old ties and pre-poll alliance with the BJP after the declaration of Maharashtra election results 2019 due to BJP’s refusal to the rotation of CM post. The Shiv Sena stuck to its 50:50 claim after the Maharashtra election results were declared, saying that the BJP had agreed to it before the formation of their alliance. The BJP, however, refused to acknowledge such a promise.

Maharashtra government formation live update @2:20 PM: Uddhav Thackeray will be the first from the Thackeray family to hold the CM post. Aaditya Thackeray had earlier become the first member of the Thackeray family to contest and win an election from Worli constituency.

Maharashtra government formation live update @2:10 PM: Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray will be sworn in as Maharashtra CM today at 6:40 pm at Shivaji Park in Mumbai’s Dadar area. Thackeray will be the third Shiv Sena leader to become the Maharashtra CM. Manohar Joshi was the first-ever Shiv Sena leader to be sworn in as Maharashtra CM on March 14, 1995, followed by Narayan Rane on February 1, 1999.

All the appropriate security arrangements have been made at the venue for the landmark ceremony that will witness the coming together of the ‘Maha Vikas Aghadi’- the Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress alliance.
