Maria Sharapova defeated Simona Halep to win Madrid Open title
Russia’s Maria Sharapova won the Mutua Madrid Open Tennis title by defeating Romanian Simona Halep 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the finals.
Maria Sharapova of Russia on 11 May 2014 won the Mutua Madrid Open Tennis title. To win her 1st Madrid Open title, Sharapova defeated the Romanian Simona Halep 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the finals.
With this win, Sharapova has captured 31st career title. For Halep, this was first appearance in the finals at one of the WTA’s Premier tournament.
Earlier in 2013, Sharapova lost the finals of Madrid to Serena Williams. Since 2011, the eighth seed Sharapova has lost only three times on the clay and all the defeats by the hand of world number one Serena Williams.
