Narendra Modi resigned as the Chief Minister of Gujarat to take over as the Prime Minister of India. He designated Anandiben Patel as his successor.

Narendra Modi CMNarendra Modi on 21 May 2014 resigned as the Gujarat Chief Minister to take over as the Prime Minister of India. He handed his resignation to Kamla Beniwal, the Governor of the State during a special session of the Gujarat Assembly.

Modi will be sworn-in as the Prime Minister on 26 May 2014 at Rashtrapati Bhawan and his oath will be administered by the President. He served Gujarat as its Chief Minister for consecutively three terms, which is nearly 14 years, from 7 October 2001 to 21 May 2014. He is the longest serving Chief Minister of the State.

With his resignation, he designated Gujarat Revenue Minister, Anandiben Patel as his successor as the new Chief Minister of the State. After swearing-in, Anandiben will be the first women Chief Minister of Gujarat.
