National Sports University Ordinance, 2018 comes into force

Indian President Ram Nath Kovind on June 1, 2018 gave his assent to the National Sports Ordinance, 2018.

The ordinance had earlier received approval from the Union Cabinet on May 23, 2018. The proposal for approval of the ordinance was put forward by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

Key Features

The National Sports University Ordinance, 2018 will be along the lines of the National Sports University Bill, 2017.

The approval of the ordinance will pave way for the set up of the country’s first National Sports University with headquarters at Manipur.

The specialised University, first of its kind, will aim to promote sports education in the areas of sports sciences, sports technology, sports management and sports coaching.

It will also function as a national training centre for select sports disciplines by adopting the best international practices.

Significance: The University would help provide a boost to sports activities in the country and also improve the country’s sports performance at the national and international levels. It will also lead to employment generation.

The proposal was formally announced by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in his Budget speech of 2014-15 on July 10, 2014.

For the establishment of the University, the Manipur government has made available around 325.90 acres of land in Koutruk, West Imphal district of Manipur.
