Earthquake Struck Western China

A series of strong earthquakes that struck a mountainous Tibetan area of western China on 14 April 2010 killed at least 400 and injured more than 10000. According to China’s earthquake agency the quake, which struck Qinghai province recorded the maximum magnitude of 7.1.

According to a report on network readiness by France’s Insead business school and the World Economic Forum released on 25 March 2010, US fell two notches to fifth in a ranking of national Internet and phone systems. The country has to boost network spending if it wants to equal Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark and Singapore.

Taslima in News for a Derogatory Article on Islam

The chairman of the National Minorities Commission, Mohamed Shafi Qureshi, asked the Indian government in March 2010 to review its decision on allowing Taslima Nasreen to stay in India sighting that the Bangladeshi author is in the habit of defaming Islam. There was a recent incident of violence in Karnataka over an article in a Kannada newspaper reportedly written by Taslima.

Justice Gyan Sudha Misra- New Supreme Court Judge

The Supreme Court collegiums in a meeting on 23 March 2010 headed by Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan recommended the elevation of Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court Gyan Sudha Misra as a Supreme Court judge. Justice Misra would be the fourth woman judge of the Supreme Court, after Fatima Beevi, Sujata Manohar, and Ruma Paul.

Timothy Geithner’s Visit to India

US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner visited India in the first week of April 2010. He met  Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia on 6 April 2010  to address two of the five pillars of the India-U.S. strategic partnership — economics, and trade and agriculture.

He had tried to prevent this degeneration of the organization into a terrorist group and attempted to maintain the organisations mass character thus precipitating the differences between him and Charu Majumdar.

Justice J.S. Khehar- New Chief Justice of Karnataka HC

Justice J.S. Khehar in April 2010 was declared the new Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. He replaced Justice P.D. Dinakaran as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court.

Amrik Singh Expired

Noted educationist Amrik Singh passed away on 24 March 2010. In his illustrious career that expanded over six decades he served as the vice-chancellor of Punjabi University in Patiala, held the position of the secretary general of Association of Indian Universities for over 17 years and had been a member of the National Integration Council. 

Sir Alec Bedser Died

Former Surrey and England cricketer, Sir Alec Bedser, died at the age of 91 on 4 April 2010. The fast bowler had received knighthood in 1997.

The NACIL board appointed Austrian Airlines executive vice-president (flight operations) Gustav Baldauf as Air India’s new chief operating officer (COO) on 6 April 2010. Prior to working with Austrian Airlines, Baldauf worked with Jet Airways as vice-president for flight operations.

Coca-Cola Accused of Causing Environmental Damage

A high-power committee headed by additional chief secretary K Jayakumar was appointed by Kerala government. The report submitted by the committee to the state water resources minister N K Premachandran on 22 March 2010 accused Coca-Cola of causing damages to the tune of Rs 216.26 crore through the operation of its bottling plant in Plachimada in Palakkad district.

NMR to be Revived

Indian Railways decided to revive The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) in April 2010. NMR a UNESCO recognised heritage service was ravaged by floods in November 2009. The project estimated to cost the Railways about Rs 11 crore would bring back tourist who travel in the NMR train puffing through the deep forests to reach the Queen of Hill Stations, Udhagamandalam.

The Finance Ministry Secretary Ashok Chawla on 5 April 2010 launched the e-Office programme developed by National Informatics Centre. The programme is directed towards attaining paperless office by enabling access to internal information for its employees through any computer.

Awards to Promote Haryanvi Culture

The Haryana government on 5 April 2010 announced three new awards – Haryanvi Puraskar, Hasya Puraskar and Mahila Rachnakar Puraskar to promote Haryanvi culture. The amount of Mahakavi Surdas Samman Award was hiked from Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 1.50 lakh and the amount of Haryana Sahitya Rattan Samman Award from Rs. 2 lakh to Rs. 2.50 lakh from this year.

Apa Sherpa- to Climb Everest for the 20th Time

Nepalese climber Apa Sherpa, who holds the world record for most successful climbs of Mount Everest with 19 ascents left Kathmandu on 6 April for his 20th accent. He is set to climb the 8848 m high Mount Everest that stands in front of Khumbu Glacier, one of the longest glaciers in the world.

New Airfield at Phalodi
