Feb 9, 2015 15:15 IST

Nickolay Mladenov of Bulgaria was on 5 February 2015 appointed as new United Nations (UN) Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process and Personal Representative to the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Palestinian Authority.

His appointment was approved by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Mladenov succeeded Robert Serry of the Netherlands. He will oversee the ongoing UN-backed reconstruction efforts in Gaza.

This reconstruction in Gaza was undertaken by UN after thousands of people were displaced in July 2014 during the month long Israel-Palestinian conflict.

Prior to this appointment, Mladenov was head of the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI).

Nickolay Mladenov, a Member of the European Parliament from 2007 to 2009, served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Government of the then Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov from 2010 to 2013.
