Nirmala Sitharaman has been appointed as Finance Minister

Nirmala Sitharamanwas greeted at the office in North Block by Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs designate, Anurag Singh Thakur. Nirmala Sitharaman has served as the Union Defence Minister since 2017. She is currently a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) from Karnataka. In 2014, she was elected as Rajya Sabha MP from Andhra Pradesh. She has also served as the Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs and later the Minister for Commerce and Industry with Independent Charge.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been appointed Nirmala Sitharaman India’s next finance minister. With this responsibility she has become India’s first full time woman finance minister. Nirmala Sitharaman is the first woman finance minister after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi who held the same portfolio for just one year (July 1969 and June 1970).

Narendra Modi and total 57 ministers took oath of office and secrecy at a grand ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhawan. The Union Cabinet for the 17th Lok Sabha includes 24 cabinet ministers, 9 ministers of state with independent charge and 24 Ministers of State (MoS).

 About Nirmala Sitharaman

•    Nirmala Sitharaman was born in Tamil Nadu's Tiruchirapalli on August 18, 1959.
•    She completed her graduation (BA economics) from Seethalakshmi Ramasamy College, Tiruchirappalli while completed her MA in economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
•    She joined Bhartiy Janta Party (BJP) in year 2006.
•    When Nirmala Sitharaman was appointed as Defence Minister she became second defence minister after Indira Gandhi.
•    Before this, she was had served as the Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs under the Ministry of Finance and the Minister for Commerce and Industry with independent charge.
