Prakash Javadekar launched major initiatives on International Biodiversity Day

While stressing on the theme, Prakash Javadekar stated that ‘Our solutions are in nature’ and that protecting biodiversity is very essential, especially in the present context as it is the nature that shields us from various catastrophe.

The Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Prakash Javadekar launched major initiatives for the conservation of Biodiversity on May 22, 2020. The initiatives were launched during the virtual celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity.

During the launch, the union minister also invited the countries who have been interested in improving their biodiversity scenarios. The minister also stated that India, a mega biodiverse country is ready to share the experiences and best practices with the other countries.

While stressing on the theme, Prakash Javadekar stated that ‘Our solutions are in nature’ and that protecting biodiversity is very essential, especially in the present context as it is the nature that shields us from various catastrophe.

Key Highlights:

•    The Union Minister emphasized the need of limiting our consumption and to promote a sustainable lifestyle.

•    He also stated that we as a community need to restrict our consumption as we cannot consume endlessly. We need to keep the future generations in perspective.

•    Prakash Javadekar also talked about pollination and stated that the bees and insects that pollinate are vanishing. He informed that how India is reviving beekeeping culture as bees pollinate, collect honey, and serve nature.

•    During the virtual meet, the Union Minister the initiatives such as Samrakshan internship programme, a campaign against illegal trafficking of endangered species, webinar series on biodiversity, and awareness campaign by WWF.

Samrakshan Internship Programme:

The Union Minister launched the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) Biodiversity Samrakshan Internship Programme. It proposes to engage 20 students for one year who have postgraduate degrees. The students will be selected through transparent, open, and online competitive services.

The said programme will engage creative and dynamic students who have been passionate to learn about natural resource management and biodiversity conservation. The set of selected students will be required to projects of NBA in various states and Union Territories as well as to technically assist the State Biodiversity Boards in the discharge of their mandates.

UNEP Campaign on Illegal Trafficking of Endangered Species:

The launch of the UNEP campaign on Illegal Trafficking of Endangered Species: Not All Animals Migrate by Choice emphasizes the illegal trade in wildlife that carries the risk of spreading dangerous pandemics.

The campaign launched during the virtual meet by the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau with UNEP also seeks to raise awareness as well as plans on advocating solutions.

Webinar series on Biodiversity Conservation and Diversity:

The event also launched a webinar series on the 2002 act of Biodiversity Conservation and Biological Diversity along with the WWF Model Conference of Parties (MCoP). The initiative will involve the younger generation so that they can enter in the new beginnings as well as engage in conversations along with the impact of humanity’s footprint on biodiversity. They will also learn the importance of sustenance of biodiversity for our own survival.

Awareness Campaign supported by WWF:

The awareness campaign launched during the virtual meet will highlight the crucial role played by nature through its free ecological services for humankind.
