Russian opposition politician Boris Nemtsov shot dead in Moscow

Boris Nemtsov, the former Deputy Prime Minister of Russia and present leading Russian opposition politician was shot dead on 27 February 2015. The unidentified attacker shot him four times in Central Moscow.

55-year-old Nemtsov was gunned down a day before he was supposed to lead a demonstration against Putin’s support for the pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine and his economic policies. The demonstration was scheduled to be held on 1 March 2015.

At the time of his death, he was serving as
• The Member of the regional parliament of Yaroslavl Oblast to which he was elected in 2013
• The Co-chair of the Republican Party of Russia – People’s Freedom Party (RPA-PARNAS), which is a member of the European Liberal-Democratic Alliance since 2012
• One of the leaders of the Solidarnost movement. Solidarnost is a Russian liberal democratic political movement founded in 2008 by a number of well-known members of the liberal democratic opposition, including Garry Kasparov, Boris Nemtsov and others from the Yabloko and Union of Right Forces

He also was one of the founders of Young Russia Movement in 1998. Nemtsov had served Russia as its first Deputy Prime Minister under the late President Boris Yeltsin during 1997 - 1998. During this period he also served as Minister of Fuel and Energy of Russia.
