Union Ministry of External Affairs (MoEA) on 23 April 2014 appointed Suresh Kumar Reddy as India's first Ambassador to the separate Indian Mission to Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) & East Asia Summit. He is expected to take up his assignment shortly.
Presently, he is working as the Ambassador of India to Iraq.
India has focused on ASEAN for the past couple of decades through its Look East Policy initiated in 1991. Asean and India have entered into a regional economic comprehensive partnership in 2011 resulting in trade worth 80 billion US dollar. At the heart of India's ASEAN initiative is connectivity and trade.
Besides, the bilateral relationship with the ASEAN is also from strategic viewpoint. A stronger relationship with the member countries of ASEAN especially Myanmar would help India in countering insurgencies in North-east of India.
The north-eastern States are considered as the gateway to ASEAN. The government of India believes it is imperative to establish connectivity between the northeast and the rest of India to create connectivity between India and ASEAN countries.
