Telangana MLA Ramesh Chennamaneni’s Citizenship cancelled for 'Concealing Facts'

Ramesh Chennamaneni’s Citizenship Cancelled: The Union Home Ministry has cancelled the Indian citizenship of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) MLA Ramesh Chennamaneni for concealing facts about his foreign tours. The MLA is alleged to have secretly taken German citizenship and not informed about it.

The Home Ministry said in an order that he misled the Indian government by making false statements or hiding facts. According to the rules, it is mandatory for a person to stay in India for one year continuously before applying for Indian citizenship. MLA Chennamaneni is accused of manipulating the facts.

MHA Order against Chennamaneni’s Citizenship

The Union Home Ministry on November 20, 2019, issued a new order revoking the citizenship of TRS MLA Ramesh Chennamaneni to hide the facts related to foreign visits. The Ministry said in its 13-page order that the competent authority considered various aspects such as Chennamaneni is a sitting MLA and has no criminal past or no case of crime registered against him. He has not been involved in any activity like terrorism, espionage, serious organized crime or a war crime.

The Home Ministry said in an order that he misled the Indian government by making a false statement or hiding facts. If he had stated the fact that he was not living in India for a year before applying, the competent authority in this ministry would not grant him citizenship.

What is Ramesh Chennamaneni’s Case?

• The MLA took citizenship of Germany in the year 1993. In 2008, Ramesh Chennamaneni returned to India and applied for the citizenship but it is alleged that he used fake papers for this.
• In 2009, he contested elections for the first time on a Telugu Desam Party ticket. Chennamaneni was accused of contesting elections using fake documents.
• In 2013, the High Court declared the election of Ramesh Chennamaneni illegal due to dual citizenship.
• TRS MLA Ramesh Chennamaneni went to the Supreme Court against this decision of the High Court. But the Supreme Court terminated Ramesh Chennamaneni's assembly membership.
• Subsequently, in 2017, the Ministry of Home Affairs decided to cancel his citizenship. The Telangana High Court later asked the Home Ministry to consider its decision.

About Ramesh Chennamaneni

Ramesh Chennamaneni belongs to a political family from Vemulwada, he was three times MLA. In 2009, he contested for the first time on a Telugu Desam Party ticket. His father Rajeshwar Rao was a freedom fighter and was a 6-time MLA.
