The Friends of Syria on 22 June 2013 decided to give urgent military support to Syrian rebels. A decision to this effect was taken at the meeting of the foreign ministers of the 11 countries in Qatari capital Doha.Foreign ministers and senior officials of France, Germany, Egypt, Italy, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Britain and the United States attended the meeting. However, a divided Syrian opposition was absent.
The Friends of Syria is a core group of 11 foreign ministers from the western and the Arab nations. It is convened periodically on the topic of Syria outside the U.N. Security Council. The group was initiated by then French President Nicolas Sarkozy, and its first meeting took place on 24 February 2012 in Tunisia.
