The US Senate appointed Ashton B Carter as Defense Secretary

Feb 16, 2015 11:11 IST

The US Senate on 12 February 2015 appointed Ashton B Carter as the Defense Secretary. He replaced Chuck Hagel. Chuck Hagel announced his resignation in November 2014.

The senate approved the Bill of his appointment with an overwhelming vote of 93 to 5.

Carter will be the United States’ 25th and Obama's fourth defense secretary in six years after Hagel, Panetta and Robert Gates.

Earlier, he had spent two years as the department's technology and weapons-buying chief, before starting his tenure as the deputy defense secretary from 2011 to 2013.

He also worked as assistant secretary of defense for international security policy during Bill Clinton's administration.
