The Government of Tamil Nadu decided to install the GPS connected panic button in all the auto rickshaws in Chennai in order to regulate this mode of transport. The step was decided upon in the light of rising number of crimes against women in all the Indian cities.

All the auto rickshaws plying in Chennai will have the electronic digital printer meter with GPS that will not just give the details of the fare and distance travelled by the passenger, but also will include the panic button which when pressed, will enable the police to assist the passenger. The movement of all these vehicles will be monitored by the police control room.

It is important to note that supplying the metres like these for around 71470 auto rickshaws in Chennai for free will cost the Government of Tamil Nadu 80 crore Rupees.
