Lokpal, the Indian Ombudsman, a reality now

• Lokpal and Lokayukta Bill, 2013 was passed by the Lok Sabha on 18 December 2013 after the Rajya Sabha passed it on 17 December 2013 with some amendments.
• The Bill envisages the establishment of an all encompassing anti-corruption watchdog that even covers Prime Minister within its purview with some safeguards.
• Most importantly, the Bill frees the investigation agency CBI from political interference. Now, the Lokpal will have power of superintendence and direction over any investigation agency including CBI for cases referred to them by Lokpal.

Hungry Millions to have Food Security

• The National Food Security Bill became law on 10th September 2013.
• The primary objective of the law is to provide for food and nutritional security to the citizens.
• The law guarantees 5 kg of rice, wheat and coarse cereals per month per person at 3, 2 and 1 Rupees respectively.

India successfully Launched Mangalyaan

• India's premier space agency, ISRO, successfully launched its historic Mangalyaan (Mars Mission) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, on 5 November 2013.
• It was India’s first mission to the red planet. The mission follows India’s successful 2008-2009 Chandrayaan-1 moon probe, which discovered water molecules in the lunar soil.
• The total cost of the Mars mission is 73 million US dollars.

Telangana to be the 29th State of India

• The Union Cabinet approved the creation of Telangana as a separate State on 5 December 2013.
• The 29th State of India will comprise of 10 districts whereas Andhra Pradesh will have 13 districts.
• Hyderabad will be the common capital for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for a period of 10 year.

9th WTO Ministerial Conference

• The 9th WTO Ministerial Conference concluded on 6 December 2013 at Bali, Indonesia.
• The highlight was the issuing of revised draft of Bali Package on Food Security that addresses India’s concern.
• The draft proposes an interim mechanism to safeguard minimum support prices given to farmers against the WTO prescribed caps.

COP-19 paved way for new global climate treaty

• The COP-19, UN Climate Change Conference 2013 concluded in Warsaw, Poland on 23 November 2013.
• The member nations approved a way out for a new global climate treaty to be signed in Paris in 2015.
• Key decisions adopted at the Conference include decisions on further advancing the Durban Platform, the Green Climate Fund and Long-Term Finance, the Warsaw Framework for REDD Plus, the Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage and et al.

Syria nodded to join Chemical Weapons Convention

• Syria officially joined the United Nations Chemical Weapons Convention, which outlaws production and use of chemical weapons, on 14 October 2013.
• Syria is the 190th country to join the convention. Only six states have yet to sign the international treaty.
• The move comes as international inspectors are working to destroy the chemical weapon stockpile of the Assad regime in Syria.

Iran and P5 +1 reached agreement on Geneva Plan

• Iran and P5+1 group of Nations reached a breakthrough deal to curb Iran's nuclear programme in exchange for limited sanctions relief on 24 November 2013.
• An agreement to this effect was signed at UN Headquarters in Geneva between the Chief negotiator for the six nations, Catherine Marie Ashton and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Jawad Zarief.
• The interim deal for six months is intended to give time and space to the international community to work towards a comprehensive agreement.

Land Acquisition Bill, 2011 passed by the Lok Sabha

• The Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, 2011, was passed by the Lok Sabha on 29 August 2013.
• The aim of the bill is providing fair compensation to people whose land has been taken away for setting up the buildings or factories.
• The bill also intends to bring in more transparency to the process of land acquisition, thereby bringing assurance of rehabilitation to the affected people.

• Raguram Rajan took over the charge as the 23rd Governor of Reserve Bank of India on 4 August 2013.
• He will succeed outgoing Governor of RBI, Dr. Subbarao.
• Raguram Rajan at 50 years is the youngest RBI Governor.
