Bilkis Bano case SC directs Gujarat Govt for compensation

The Supreme Court directed the Gujarat Government on April 23, 2019 to give Rs 50 lakh compensation, a job and accommodation to Bilkis Bano. She was gang raped during the 2002 riots in the Gujrat. This compensation comes two years after the Bombay High court delivered justice, convicting eleven of the accused, including five Gujarat policemen and two doctors for tampering with evidence.

Bilkis Bano had earlier refused to accept the offer of Rs 5 lakh and had sought exemplary compensation from the state government in a plea before the Supreme Court.  In 2002 Gujarat riots 14 members of Bilkis' family were killed, including her two-and-half-year old daughter.

US waivers for Iran oil imports end on May 2, won’t impact Chabahar Port Project

The US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo on April 23, 2019 announced that the sanction waivers that it had granted to some countries still buying oil from Iran will terminate on May 2, 2019.

With this announcement, five countries namely, India, China, Japan, South Korea and Turkey will no longer be exempted from the US sanctions, if they continue to import Iranian oil after their waivers end on May 2. There will be no grace period for these five economies to comply with the decision.

The United States clarified that the Chabahar Port Project would not be impacted by sanctions on Iran. The Chabahar Port Project is being developed by India in Iran.

SC constitutes three-judge panel to probe case against CJI

The Supreme Court on April 23, 2019 constituted a three-judge panel headed by Justice SA Bobde, the senior-most judge in apex court after the Chief Justice of India (CJI), to inquire into the sexual harassment complaint by a former junior court assistant against CJI Ranjan Gogoi.

Besides Justice SA Bobde, the inquiry panel comprises Justice NV Ramana, the next senior most judge, and Justice Indira Banerjee, who was elevated to the Supreme Court on August 7, 2018.

China to build moon station in 'about 10 years'

China plans to send a manned mission to the moon and to build a research station there within the next decade. The announcement was made by the head of China’s National Space Administration, Zhang Kejian during his speech marking ‘Space Day’.

Kejian revealed that the nation plans to build a scientific research station on the moon's South Pole within the next 10 years. China aims to achieve space superpower status. The nation took a major step towards that goal when it became the first nation to land a rover on the far side of the moon in January 2019.

International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace 2019

The first ever official ‘International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace’ was observed by the United Nations (UN) on April 24, 2019. The UN General Assembly convened a one-day high-level plenary meeting to commemorate and promote the day.

The International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace was officially proclaimed to be observed ever year on 24 April by the UN General Assembly on December 12, 2018 through resolution A/RES/73/127.
